Selected international projects

REACH-related projects

Besides several national projects on the new European chemicals legislation REACH, FoBiG was involved in the so-called SPORT project (Strategic Partnership on REACH testing). SPORT was a pan-European project involving several chemical companies to check the workability of registration of chemicals under REACH. It was supported by the European Commission, the chemical industry and member states competent authorities and was sponsored by CEFIC. FoBiG also worked in an Europe-wide consortium to develop guidance on the evaluation tasks (dossier evaluation, substance evaluation) of the Chemicals Agency and the competent authorities under REACH (RIP 4.1/4.2). Together with other institutes from France and Denmark and under subcontract of the Öko-Institut , FoBiG is engaged in the REACH Baseline study . This project was commissioned by the Statistical Office of the European Commission (EUROSTAT).

European research projects

In cooperation with a consortium of companies and government agencies from several European countries, FoBiG has been part of a 4-year EU  research project called “RiskOfDerm” (Risk Assessment for Occupational Dermal Exposure to Chemicals). Within the project, FoBiG was particularly involved in the development of a risk assessment and management tool kit.

In another EU research project for the European Commission entitled "Mutagenic Dyes in Textile Finishing", FoBiG was engaged in the toxicological evaluation of textile dyestuffs. The main goals of the project, which was carried out in cooperation with SME (small and medium enterprises) from several European countries, were the identification of dyes used in textile finishing showing mutagenic effects and the development of a concept to completely substitute the identified dyes.

Projects for the Institute of Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP) of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission

FoBiG works on behalf of JRC/IHCP’s  “European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods” (ECVAM) to develop segments of a database on alternative methods to replace animal experiments (db-alm) (topics: alternatives to the rabbit Draize eye irritation assay, non-animal metabolism-mediated/hepatotoxicity testing and non-animal techniques for the study of percutaneous absorption). In addition, FoBiG is engaged in a project aiming at the development of a tool to assess the quality of toxicological data. This project is carried out in cooperation with the German Cancer Research Centre on behalf of ECVAM.

On behalf of JRC/IHCP’s unit “Physical and Chemical Exposure”, FoBiG together with other partners is involved in the development of the EIS-ChemRisks toolbox, an expert system which aims to facilitate and support harmonised exposure assessments for consumer products.

Project for the Scientific Committee on Occupational Exposure Levels (SCOEL)

To support the derivation of European OELs, FoBiG has prepared concise monographs on 26 chemicals to be evaluated by the SCOEL. This work was carried out under contract of the DG Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities.

Cooperation with agencies in the USA

Under contract with the German Environmental Protection Agency (Umweltbundesamt) and in cooperation with the US Environmental Protection Agency (US EPA), FoBiG was engaged in the derivation of "Acute Exposure Guideline Levels" (AEGL) for a number of chemicals. These are prepared in cooperation with assigned "chemical managers" from various countries and the draft documents are presented and discussed at the US "National Advisory Committee" meetings.
