Chemikalien- und Biozidrecht, Umweltchemikalien und Lebensmittelsicherheit. Zu unseren Kunden gehören u.a. Unternehmen der chemischen Industrie, nationale Behörden sowie Institutionen der EU. The comprehensive information on the safe use of epoxy resin products can now be found in a new look on the website (currently only available in German) of the Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IFA) of the German Social Accident Insurance (DGUV). Here, all the results of various research projects are available in collected form, e.g. on ranking according to the sensitizing potency of ingredients, training material for the continuing professional development of workers from industries that frequently handle these agents, or practical tips in the form of glove recommendations or the self-assessments of epoxy resin products by manufacturers. If a product is certified to be safer for the workers concerned according to the evaluation based on the application guide for self-assessment, these products are listed there. And reference is also made to the EIS mixture calculator (EIS-Gemischerechner: currently only available in German) developed largely by FoBiG for comparing the sensitizing effect strengths of two technically comparable epoxy resin products.

On 4 January 2022, the adapted REACH Regulation will enter into force. It newly regulates the use of tattooing products [entry 75 of Annex XVII of the REACH Regulation (Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006)]. Tattooing products consists of pigments and additives, some of which are suspected of being CMR substances. The amended regulation is intended to make the use of tattoo inks safer for consumers. However, so far there are nor binding assessment criteria for tattooing products according to which the safety assessment must be carried out. Therefore, the BfR (Federal Institute for Risk Assessment) has now issued a statement in which it presents minimum requirements and test methods for the substances in question. The minimum requirements are to form a basis for future risk assessment. Test methods for this already exist in part; however, according to the BfR, further methods and data for assessing the health risks would also need to be developed.
 

Some results of a DGUV-funded research project on the sensitizing potency of prepolymers from epoxy resin systems will be presented by our cooperation partner, Eurofins BPT GmbH, in a poster at the Eurotox congress on 27 September 2021.

The European Commission plans to include 5 further substances in REACH Annex XIV. Companies using these substances will then need to submit applications for authorisations to secure continued use. Companies should start early to check whether substitution is feasible and, if not, prepare for authorisation.

The FoBiG risk assessment on the use of UV inks in consumer printed products has been published. Laboratory simulations detected only low levels of individual acrylates and photoinitiators in artificial saliva or sweat from UV prints, which varied depending on the type of paper and UV lamp used and the degree of curing of the printed product. However, a health hazard or sensitisation is not to be worried for the consumer when handling printed products with UV inks.

Risk assessment

We are proud and happy to announce that FoBiG continues its successful work on preparing draft dossiers for harmonized classification and labelling. One new project started end of last year on behalf of the Dutch Competent Authority RIVM and another one – as part of a framework contract with DG Environment –began quite recently, this one with partners DHI from Denmark. In these projects FoBiG will prepare draft CLH dossiers with substances with CMR properties (https://echa.europa.eu/support/clh). We take the success in these competitions as an acknowledgement of the quality of our previous work.

A publication in "Gefahrstoffe - Reinhaltung der Luft" (Hazardous Substances - Air Pollution Control) is dedicated to the work of the intersectoral working group on epoxy resins to avoid skin diseases triggered by contact with epoxy resin systems (Gefahrstoffe 81 (2021) No. 01-02; German only). FoBiG employee Karin Heine contributed to the article. Among other things, it contains a description of the evaluation of the sensitising potency of epoxy resin substances and their use for the comparison of technically similar products in the mixture calculator (“Gemischerechner”, German only). This was largely developed by FoBiG.
 

The textbook "Regulatory Toxicology" (ed. F-X. Reichl and M. Schwenk) is currently being prepared by Springer Verlag for its 2nd English edition, which will be published in print in September 2021. The chapters in which FoBiG staff members are involved have already been revised and are now available online-first on the publication platform SpringerLink:

What a year...

in which much more than just the toxicological challenges had to be overcome. Like many of you, we are sure that improvisation was (and still is) always in demand in times of the Corona crisis. Faster and more extensively than originally planned, we have established home office capacities and extended online conference systems, without losing sight of the actual work. This was not always easy.

In the midst of these events, Jan Oltmanns – as planned and prepared for a long time – took over the management of the company in July 2020 from Klaus Schneider, who, in addition to a little more leisure time, now devotes himself entirely to exciting projects and will continue to be available as your contact person.

Many thanks to all friends, business partners and customers for the good cooperation and sometimes high flexibility in this extraordinary year.
We wish you a well-deserved break, a relaxing Christmas holiday, a good start into the New Year 2021 and stay safe!
